Pastoral Letter about Making Disciples

Dear Friends,

Greetings to you in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ! May the presence of the Holy Spirit fill you as you live by the love of God! For we are part of the church that goes around the world! Our little corner of the world gets to share and praise Jesus just like other corners of the world gets to share and praise Jesus!

As we are being part of the church, how do we make disciples of Jesus Christ? In a bygone era we Christians may have made disciples by having babies, raising them in church, and that was it. The church kept going because babies kept coming every few years. Sometimes this continues to work; sometimes it doesn’t work out this way. Within a particular family, about every 20 years or so new babies would come along.

Another approach of making disciples has been to invite our family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances to worship God with us. In time as our more and more people came to church, many would decide to follow Jesus. We would then provide times for study, prayer, and means of living out our faith. I once read that we United Methodists, on average, invite someone to join us in worship about once every 35 years!

If new people are coming to a church between every 20 and 35 years, then how do we keep making disciples of Jesus Christ?! I am glad to see we have folks who are inviting their family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances to church more than once every 35 years! We don’t want to be average. We want to be faithful to God through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit!

When babies come along, we look forward to them growing up, disturbing our peace, making messes, and learning about Jesus through our love. We want to help raise the children to know Jesus. We want to be faithful to God through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit!

Along the way, babies and adults get baptized. We teach them in Sunday School classes, Vacation Bible School, Confirmation Classes, and Adult Membership classes about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. As we teach, we get to re-learn about our own faith in Jesus. Let us make disciples for Jesus Christ. Invite people to worship God with us. We want to be faithful to God through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit!

See you Sunday!

In Christ’s Service,
John
